Imagine hiring a babysitter who tackles your toddler to the ground every time they think about doing something risky. Great instincts. Terrible to live with.
That’s a watchdog during development.

“But wait, why do you need a babysitter in the first place? Isnt this overcomplicating?”
The moment you put a human being inside a machine capable of generating real forces – fun stops being the only consideration.🫨
Here’s the thing about electronics: they can freeze. A processor can hang. A software loop can get stuck. And when that happens, the machine doesn’t know it’s blind. And when motion system is blind… you better run!

Hence the watchdog! In the final product it’s non-negotiable… but while you’re still building, it fights you at every step: killing the system mid-breakpoint, resetting you just as you’re closing in on a bug.
So instead of one overprotective babysitter, we built our hardware to grow up in three stages:
1. No WDG
pure functionality first. We build, we break, we debug freely. We even test the watchdog logic itself here, just without letting it intervene.
2. Window WDG
once the code stabilises, it starts watching timing. Pet it within the window, or it acts. This catches the “system is stuck” class of faults.
3. Functional WDG
the final stage. Being alive isn’t enough anymore, the system has to prove it’s doing the right work. This is what ships.
The watchdog was never the enemy. Introducing it at the wrong time was.
